Testing remote server database connection with Universal Data Link(UDL) files

January 20, 2012

Problem: We need to test the connection to the database on the remote server. No SQL management studio is available on the client machine.

Resolution: Universal Data Link files can be used for this purpose.

  • Create an empty file: filename.udl
  • Open the file. Data Link Properties window opens
  • Enter the server and the database parameters into the window
  • Click Test Connection button when done.
  • If the connection is ok, save the file.
  • Open the file in the text editor to see the connection string.
